Apple iPhone 12, Pro, Pro Max and Mini announcement summary

A roundup of Apple’s 12 series phones – iPhone 12, Pro, Pro Max and Mini.

2020 is the year of Apple 5G, a feature of all four new models. Yes, four models- this year Apple introduced two Pro models in addition to two iPhone 12 models. The new addition to the family is the iPhone Mini.

The iPhone 12 Mini and vanilla-coloured iPhone 12 promise to be hot buys as they offer the same 5G speeds as the Pro models and feature OLED displays- no more LCD for more affordable phones. Screen cut-out and Face ID live on, even in the tiny 5.4-inch mini-screen.

These two models share the same camera setup, wide and ultra-wide. If you want a telephoto camera, you have to choose the Pro model.

But it’s not that simple, because the iPhone Pro Max has a better main and telephoto camera. The main camera has a larger 1/1.7″ sensor (with 1.7 µm pixels) and a brighter f/1.6 aperture, resulting in an 87% improvement in low-light performance compared to the 11 Pro Max.

The telephoto lens increases the focal length to 65 mm, which results in
2.5x magnification. Apple also improved image processing, making it possible to use night mode on the wide, ultra-wide and front cameras, although the tele camera misses this.

The iPhone 12 Pro is more like the iPhone 11 Pro camera. The main camera upgrade is the f/1.6 aperture, but the sensor size remains unchanged. Similarly, the telephoto camera remains at 52 mm/2x magnification. However, both iPhone 12 Pro models feature LiDAR, which speeds up autofocus and helps render bokeh in the dark.

While the race for megapixels is on, Apple is sticking with 12 MP. That’s not to say that the 2020 models don’t come with innovations – for example, they can now record Dolby Vision HDR video and offer the new ProRAW format for photos.

What’s more, the MagSafe system has been redesigned as a wireless charging system that attaches with magnets. It’s faster than conventional Qi charging- 15 W vs. 7.5 W- and the magnets can be used as storage accessories( like a minimalist card wallet). Apple introduced several MegaSafe accessories and made their 12 series models 20W fast charging compliant. Consider taking a look at the above chargers as Apple will
will no longer include chargers or headphones in the retail box.
But don’t worry, you can get everything you need at Evelatus.

Finally, these four new models will be available in two flavours, starting with the 6.1″ models-iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. And next month, iPhone Pro Max and iPhone Mini.

While the 12 Series will come with iOS 14.1, owners of older models will also
will be able to enjoy it – Apple has just started rolling out the 14.1 update. And it’s not just phones that are getting updates, IpadOS 14.1 and tvOS 14.1 will also be released.

Apple also unveiled the HomePod mini – a smart speaker with new UWB skills thanks to the S5 chip, which also provides computing audio.

Possible dates when the phones will be available:

  • iPhone 12 Mini : 13 November 2020
  • iPhone 12: 23 October 2020
  • iPhone Pro : 23 October 2020
  • iPhone Pro Max: 13 November 2020
